Chapter Twelve

Fes stood outside the domed building, looking up at the night sky. The stars that twinkled were bright, shimmering in the sky much the same way the buildings seemed to shimmer around him. There was something majestic about it, and he enjoyed the calm night sky. It was quieter than what he was accustomed to, and there was a certain tension in the air, though he suspected that came from him more than anything else.

Chornan stood next to him, having been silent ever since they emerged from inside. Fes couldn’t read him, not well, but he sensed that there was great frustration within the man.

Jesla had remained behind, speaking to the rest of the people around the table.

“What does it mean?” Jayell asked, breaking the silence.

Chornan blinked, taking a deep breath and letting it out in a heavy sigh. “It means that you cannot stay here.”

“That was the question?” Fes asked.

Chornan looked over at him, frowning slightly. “Is that not what you would have wanted?”

Fes shrugged. “I never wanted to request to stay here. I came looking for help.”

“And if you were granted a place here, that help would have been yours,” Chornan said.

Fes breathed out. He thought he understood. They had been trying to decide whether he could be allowed to stay so that he could then ask for their help. It actually surprised him that Chornan had presented him for that.

“What changed your mind?” Fes asked.

Chornan looked back at the building, staring at it for a moment. “You survived the Dragon’s Eye.”

“That’s not the entire reason for you,” Fes said. “If it were, you would have offered me help the moment that I was pulled from the water.”

“That’s not the entire reason,” Chornan agreed. “The Dragon’s Eye is a test, and it’s not one that everyone is able to pass. You did. Not only did you pass, but you revealed something about yourself. You revealed the fact that you can connect to the same source of power as we do. And you have proven yourself with the dragon.”

“Dragon, and not sky beast?”

“They call it that out of fear. They fear what it means that dragons have returned.”

“It’s not the only dragon that has returned,” Fes said. “And they shouldn’t fear a dragon that I share a connection with. They should fear the dragons the Damhur have Called.”

“I understand,” Chornan said.

“I’m not sure that you do. The Damhur control two dragons. They might be attacking the empire now, and they intend to raise more. If they can succeed in that, then your people, and the city, will no longer be safe. I came here looking for help, and I understand that you have no interest in helping, but at least help me know where I can go to get that help.”

Chornan watched him, his frown remaining on his face. “I’m afraid that I can’t offer you what you want. My people have refused. I’m unable to go against the wishes of the rest of the Hasazn.”

“Is that them?” Fes asked.
